Storage Mechanisms

  • Structural trapping: CO2 trapped beneath caprock
  • Residual trapping: CO2 as immobile phase in pores
  • Solubility trapping: CO2 dissolves in brine
  • Mineral trapping: CO2 reacts to form carbonates (long-term)

Saline aquifers rely mainly on structural + solubility trapping

Capacity Equations

Saline Aquifer (DOE Method):

M_CO2 = A × h × φ × ρ_CO2 × E

Depleted Reservoir:

M_CO2 = (OGIP × RF) × (ρ_CO2 / ρ_HC)

Where E = storage efficiency (typically 0.01-0.04 for saline)

CO2 Properties

Supercritical CO2 (T > 31°C, P > 7.4 MPa):

  • Density: 200-800 kg/m³ (depth dependent)
  • Viscosity: gas-like (low)
  • Diffusivity: liquid-like
  • Ideal for storage: high density, flows easily

Minimum depth ~800m to ensure supercritical conditions
