Rock Physics Templates

RPTs display elastic property relationships predicted by rock physics models. They show:

  • Porosity trends: How properties change with porosity
  • Fluid effects: Brine vs oil vs gas responses
  • Lithology separation: Different minerals plot in different regions
  • Interpretation space: Map seismic data to rock properties

Built using Gassmann fluid substitution with varying porosity and saturation.

Common Template Types

  • Vp vs Ip: Classic AVO interpretation space
  • Vp vs Vp/Vs: Fluid and lithology discrimination
  • Ip vs Vp/Vs: Common inversion output space
  • λρ vs μρ: LMR plot for fluid detection

Each crossplot has strengths for different interpretation goals.

Interpretation Strategy

  1. Generate template matching reservoir lithology and conditions
  2. Overlay well log data to calibrate template
  3. Map seismic inversion results onto template
  4. Identify fluid and porosity from position in template space
  5. Check if observations fall within expected rock physics bounds
