Tuning Phenomenon

Tuning thickness ≈ λ/4

When layer thickness equals one-quarter of the dominant wavelength, reflections from the top and base constructively interfere, creating maximum amplitude.

  • Below tuning: Composite response, amplitude increases with thickness
  • At tuning: Maximum amplitude (peak)
  • Above tuning: Separate top and base reflections, amplitude decreases

Resolution Limits

  • Vertical resolution (Rayleigh): λ/4 ≈ tuning thickness
Can separate two interfaces if they're this far apart
  • Detection limit: ≈ λ/30
Thinnest bed that produces measurable response
  • Wavelength: λ = V / f
Higher frequency → better resolution but less penetration
