Drainage Radius

Oil (Darcy's law):

r_d = sqrt((k × t × 0.543) / (φ × μ × c_t))

Simplified: r_d ≈ 100 × sqrt(k × t / φ)

Gas:

r_d ≈ 150 × sqrt(k × t / φ)

Where k = permeability (mD), t = time (years), φ = porosity

Well Spacing

Optimal spacing = 2 × drainage radius (no overlap)

Pattern geometries:

  • Square: Spacing = 2 × r_d × 2.47 acres/100m²
  • Hexagonal: Slightly more efficient packing

Trade-offs:

  • Tighter spacing: More wells, higher CAPEX, faster drainage
  • Wider spacing: Fewer wells, lower cost, risk of unswept areas

Economic Optimization

Optimize: NPV = Revenue - CAPEX

Revenue = EUR × Price

CAPEX = Number of Wells × Well Cost

Constraints:

  • Minimum well spacing (interference)
  • Maximum spacing (unswept areas)
  • Platform/infrastructure limits
  • Regulatory requirements
